  Swedish Weave or Huck Weaving is the one of the easiest of art needlework crafts. Because of its simplicity and beauty it is ideal for beginners. This simplicity makes it wonderful for stress relief. It is easy to do while watching TV and riding in the car or on an airplane.

  Swedish Weave is embroidery of geometric motifs, using a simple darning or weaving stitch. These are worked by weaving under the vertical double raised threads of Huckaback, Stockholm, Monk's Cloth, Aida, or any other fabric with raised floats. I even found place mats at "Pier One" that worked up nicely with # 3 Pearle Cotton.

  I taught one of my coworkers how to do this and he made an afghan for his mother for Christmas. The girls at work took a picture of him doing the weaving so his mom would believe that he really did it. Wouldn't your mother be surprised.

Monk's cloth Tips
  Now with Monk's cloth you can incorporate weaving designs into vests, jackets, afghans, pillow covers anything you wish to make that Monk's Cloth lends itself to.

Plan Colors-
  It is fun to plan your colors and create many different color schemes. The variegated yarns make lovely Afghans.

Always work from left to right.
  Work across one row of design;
turn work upside down and then work the other way. Keep turning your work so you will always work across a row from right to left. This is the preference of your hand.

Know the correct tension for you?
  Try to work with an even tension. You do not have to use an embroidery hoop or frame but if you find it easier to work with your fabric taut by all means use one. But you will have to keep moving the hoop.

Weave Back
  Do not knot ends of thread.
When finishing a row you will weave back a few stitches and clip close to work.

How to keep the yarn together?
  When using yarn be sure to keep the yarn together by rolling the needle between your thumb and first finger while working.

Stitching Technique-
  Swedish Weaving is one of the simplest stitching techniques. Sliding the needle under the floats of the fabric and using floats above or below the starting row creates the design.

Needle & Stitching tips-
  Use a blunt needle such as a tapestry or yarn needle with any eye large enough to accommodate the thread you are using.

Threads-
  There are many threads that work on the fabrics such as embroidery, Pearle, Marlitt, flower thread and I've even used some rayon floss for small patterns. With the Monk's Cloth 4 ply yarn is the best.

  In the past this needlework was used
to decorate edges of towels, tablecloths,
aprons and curtains.

  They are always started in the center of the material. If you wish to do a pattern starting in the middle count up from the bottom row and start with that row as your first row.
 
  Most patterns are mirror images. This way you can start in the middle of your afghan and have the pattern in the very center. If you will be placing a pattern on the end of your afghan, you start at the bottom of your fabric
in the center with row 1.
