I've been making paper
jewelry for over seven years now. My designs, as well as my process
has changed a lot in that time. When I started out, my designs
were entirely hand painted. I had a separate line of jewelry for
teens, and I made a lot of custom earrings and barrettes. My work
has evolved in a more abstract and contemporary direction lately.
My current work is a marriage of my passion for digital design
and love of working directly with the materials.
I start out
with a heavyweight watercolor paper base, which is hand painted
and then layered with my digital artwork. Each piece has multiple
layers of paper which gives it a nice depth. I like to add a curve
to each of the pieces to enhance the dimension, and the paper
is very stiff, so it needs to dampened before it is bent. I create
my designs on my computer using Adobe Photoshop. Once the piece
has been constructed, it is finished with multiple layers of an
acrylic glaze for durability and a nice shine. The findings and
chains are sterling silver.
The pieces
are very lightweight, so the earrings don't put any stress on
your ears. This is one of the great benefits of wearing paper
jewelry for many people. I do custom designs and/or color schemes
for people as well. I'm currently gearing up for spring which
is my favorite season, so my spring line is a lot of fun to design.
Paper is a
wonderful and very versatile medium to work in. I think what really
makes my work stand out are the vivid colors and the delicate,
yet strong nature of the medium itself.
